The documents below show the 'Big Ideas' for each learning unit and what will be covered within this. British Values are also incorporated into the planning along with a 'Wow' to engage children.
Fountain Primary Curriculum in EYFS
The Planning within the EYFS at Fountain Primary follows the children’s interests, experiences and learning needs as well as responding to seasonal events. We make regular assessments of children’s learning and we use this information to ensure that future planning reflects identified needs.
We follow the EYFS curriculum and use Development Matters when assessing children’s learning. Children learn through child-initiated play in areas of provision as well as adult-directed tasks. We believe that children have the right to learn outdoors during the EYFS and much of our learning takes place outside.
Our areas of provision are carefully planned for as well as short term planning for discrete Maths, Writing, Phonics, PE, RE and Reading sessions. We create medium term plans for each half term to ensure coverage of objectives and development of skills across the curriculum.
Throughout EYFS and KS1 Phonics is taught in discrete sessions and then incorporated into areas of provision and whole class teaching sessions.
Phonics follows the letters and sounds scheme this changes to non-nonsense spelling scheme at a point in Year 2 where the class teacher feels the class is ready to progress.
Reading is the most fundamental skill for our children. All lessons should incorporate elements of reading in addition to the teaching of reading in one-to-one and group sessions. Teachers plan their English lessons based upon high quality texts and novels. Children are inspired to write through the stories they have read written by significant authors.
In Nursery reading is taught through sharing of stories and through areas of provision.
From Reception to Year 3, reading is taught through weekly guided reading sessions or whole class reading sessions and weekly individual reading.
Weekly guided reading or whole class reading sessions continue from Year 4 to 6. Individual reading becomes less frequent (fortnightly to monthly) as children become fluent accurate readers.
Children have access to the Big Cat Reading Scheme as well as Reading Eggs (an online reading website).
At Fountain, we have Year 5 and 6 Reading Buddies who visit younger children in school weekly to help support them with their phonics, fluency and comprehension when reading.
Throughout the year, we invite authors, story-tellers and illustrators to hold assemblies and work with the children. We were very lucky to have our new library opened by two children's authors in 2017.
